Island of Milagro ~ Part Two

I’m back with my continuation on my island Milagro. So last time, I quickly gave you a rundown of the inhabitants, how the island is run, and the initial founding of the island. Now, onward.

Continuing in the History of Milagro, the fairies would occasionally disguise themselves and head into the Outside World. They did this because when Elam (one of the founders) made an alliance with the fairies, he asked that they search for the Promised One that was to destroy the serpent that corrupted Eden. Through these fairies, they learned of Abraham and his chosen descendants, they also obtained copies of prophesies, bringing them home to Milagro to be studied and shared. By the time B.C. (Before Christ) became A.D. (After Christ), many of the inhabitants were ready and eager to accept Israel’s Messiah. Fairies who witnessed the death of Jesus, His resurrection, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost are numbered among the first missionaries in the Milagroian history books. It could be argued that Milagro was largely a God-fearing nation and continued to be so.

On the not so spiritual side of history, several of the tales that would become known as the fairytales of today had started to be chronicled in Milagro’s history books. Magic was not uncommon as many citizens were given fairy gifts as babies. Fairy Godparents were also normal, even though they tended to make appearances only when their charges were in need or going on some dangerous quest. Some fairy activity was halted however when High King Benjamin took High Queen Vanessa (the Evil Queen of Snow White infamy) as his second wife. The activity that was halted, for several generations in fact, was the bestowing of gifts to newborns because of the prevalence of granting beauty. The practice was restored about five generations later when twin children descended from Seal People, fairies, commoners, and royalty were born into the High Royal family.

Mercifully, in all the many centuries and millennia of Milagro’s existence very few wars broke out. Occasionally a battle may rage between two sub-kingdoms, but the neighboring sub-kingdoms and the High Royals would be able to settle matters before they lasted a full year. But that didn’t mean that they never had trouble. Evil wizards and Banished Fairies regularly wreaked havoc on individuals and kingdoms.

However, there was also some mysterious appearances throughout Milagro’s history. And yet, not so mysterious. A young man and woman would appear then disappear within a fortnight. They were known as the Lost Prince and his Maiden, collectively the Prophesied Couple. They were said to be from the distant future, when Milagro as a nation had ceased to exist. Yet they were also meant to restore Milagro in their own time. There were also prophesies of a Last Prince and his Foreign Princess who were supposed to come when Milagro was about to fall. While there is much known about the restorers, there was little known about the survivors.

At times, the Prophesied Couple improved Milagroian life is small ways. Medical knowledge, musical instruments, and simple inventions unknown to the outside world were commonplace on the island, especially among the wealthy. Fairies also helped contribute to a certain ease of life that many if not all Milagroians experienced. All this provided an even more fairytale-like atmosphere.

Now for some Author Thoughts.

When I first thought of this island, it was simply the setting of where my rewritten fairytales took place. Then I decided to name it. My first choice was Atlantis, simply because of what I had planned for it (which I may cover in a Modern Milagro post at some point). But as my mom pointed out, Atlantis is generally thought to be more Greek or Roman in culture and architecture, so I had to find another name. In the end, I chose a Spanish word which translates to Miracle. Thus the island of Milagro came to be.

Once I “discovered” this island and learned of its location, I knew that I had to hide it from the modern world. But how to do that? Well, to put it simply, I made it disappear. Not just physically, but all traces magically erased from all documents and memories. However, since I wanted the island’s history to be known, there had to be survivors. So a handful of Milagroian natives were able to escape the island’s destruction and came to America. But this is all another story for another time and post.

Recently, I started to wonder how the magic of the island could be explained. Would I be going from the premise that C. S. Lewis used in his Narnia series? That our world used to be filled with magic but then the magic just started to fade away and Milagro was one of the last few places that have that old magic? Or would I use something completely different? So, quite honestly, I’m still not sure. I am half-considering Milagro being from a completely different world and managed to somehow slip through a tear in the reality of our own world. Or who knows, maybe Milagro is a last remnant of a world that was dying and so it found refuge on our magicless world. Yeah, my author’s mind is still working on that. Maybe I’ll figure it out. Or I may leave it to my reader’s imaginations. We’ll just have to wait to see what happens.

Well, there’s Milagro Part 2! Hope you enjoyed. Until next time, bye.
