Finally, at long last we are returning to Vindor, apparently also known as Paracosmia. I’ve been meaning to get this book, and I got it for Christmas (along with a few others). Now, I’ve finished it and will be sharing some of it in this review.
A few years have passed and Megan Bradshaw is now in college studying psychology. It is just the week before Thanksgiving and her younger brother Arden is supposed to be joining her for the week. But, when she arrives at the train station, she finds not her brother, but an old friend from Vindor in human form, Bat. Megan is now frantic to cross worlds again in order to bring her brother back.
Meanwhile, Arden has been suffering from bully troubles. Upon seeing a samurai-based people in Vindor, he is eager to live among them and learn how to fight. Instead, Guardian Selena sends him up the Blackwater River to N’gozi with a Selk, Dark Morning, and a blind Nomad girl, Talu. They are to seek out Korvin in the great library so that Arden can be returned home, and Talu to continue onward to help bring peace among the various nomadic tribes. Will things go according to plan? Can Megan find a way to open a portal between our world and Vindor? Why is there a song that only Arden can hear? Why is a mysterious mist stealing memories? And more importantly, can it be stopped?
I was very excited to finally have this book and eager to see what new adventures were to be had. Most of the characters are new, with Nikterra and Selena only making brief appearances and Megan in the Mirror World (aka our world) trying to keep Bat’s real identity of a goblin from Vindor a secret. We meet a couple of Megan’s college friends, while Arden makes new friends in Vindor and visits new places that his sister didn’t.
Where we travel with Megan through Selena’s castle, the forests, and underground caverns, Arden shows us towns along the river, peoples with echoes of Asian cultures, the pinnacle of knowledge, and people who wander the vast, windswept plains. Arden starts out rather critical of the world his sister created in her mind, but he slowly grows to love the world as much as his sister does.
I really enjoyed traveling with both siblings. Some things I started to suspect as things progressed. Others threw me for a loop in a “Wait, what?!” kind of way. I especially love the little twist thrown into the last few pages of the final chapter. Oo, yes, love it!
This book was written by Emily Golus. The tale is told over 331 pages divided between a Prologue and 36 chapters. There are titles for each chapter, and I so enjoyed meandering through them. Although during some especially tense scenes it was more gobbling up the story than meandering. An easy five river traveling dragons out of five for me.
If you loved the first Vindor book, definitely pick this one up. If you love fantasy and other worlds, read this book. If you enjoy tales of adventure and friendship, read this book. Basically, I highly recommend this book, so go find it and Escape to Vindor. Then enjoy the adventure.
Until next time.
